Anticipating that the deepest energy minimum structure for each peptide is characterized by a face-to-face arrangement of the probes (Figures 10 and 11), one is tempted to say that an orientation of the transition moment vectors close to 90° brings about the energy transfer process, while a paired orientation of the transition moments favors exciplex formation.
