note
-
Excessive fluence levels can be problematic. At high fluence two-photon processes, where molecules are ionized by one photon and then immediately decomposed by a second, may occur. As a result, the mass spectral peak intensities are not truly representative of the actual species concentrations in the flow tube. Two-photon product decomposition, for example, can regenerate a bare cluster ion. Consequently, an inflated bare cluster peak area shows up in the mass spectrum. In this case, the peak area distribution, that is the ratio of product to bare cluster peak areas, is dependent on the laser fluence and not solely on the reaction kinetics as desired. The presence of a peak area dependence on fluence results in erroneous rate coefficients.
