Selective amplification via biotin- and restriction-mediated enrichment (SABRE), a novel selective amplification procedure for detection of differentially expressed mRNAs

Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1997, 94:6831-6836. This paper describes a novel method, selective amplification via biotin- and restriction-mediated enrichment (SABRE), for detection of differentially expressed mRNAs. This procedure uses selective streptavidin-biotin affinity and restriction enzyme site reconstitution to enrich for cDNA species more abundant in one population than in another.

Parallel human genome analysis: Microarray-based expression monitoring of 1000 genes

Schena M, Shalon D, Heller R, Chai A, Brown PO, Davis RW: Parallel human genome analysis: microarray-based expression monitoring of 1000 genes. Proc Natl Acad Sci USA 1996, 93:10614-10619. This paper reports the application of the cDNA microarray technology to identify novel human genes. In these experiments, microarrays containing 1046 human cDNAs of unknown sequence were printed on glass with high-speed robotics and the resulting DNA 'chips' were used to quantitatively monitor differential expression of the cognate human genes using a highly sensitive two-color hybridization assay. Array elements that displayed differential expression patterns under given experimental conditions were characterized by sequencing.

Microfabrication and array technologies for DNA sequencing and diagnostics
-
O'Donnell-Maloney MJ, Little DP: Microfabrication and array technologies for DNA sequencing and diagnostics. Genetic Analysis 1996, 13:151-157. The authors discuss the fact that it is now possible to miniaturize numerous 'macroscale' processes and develop microfabricated arrays of immobilized oligonuceotides useful for basic research, diagnostic studies, sequence analysis and a number of novel applications.
