The dimer-adatom-stacking fault (DAS) model [K. Takayanagi, Y. Tanishiro, M. Takahashi and S. Takahashi, Surf. Sci. 164, 367 (1985)] has 12 atoms in the adatom layer, 42 atoms in the rest atom layer, and 48 atoms in the layer containing the stacking fault. Adding these figures is equal to 2×49+4, which means that the DAS model has an extra four (about 8% more) Si atoms in a (7×7) unit cell compared to the ideal structure containing the same number of Si atoms as the π-bonded and overlayer models. Because it has two more Si atoms in a unit cell (67% more), only the MTL model contains a much different number of Si atoms from the clean (7×7) phase.
