    • Webb, P.; Howdle, S., unpublished results (1998). In initial experiments, the complexes were impregnated into UHMWPE disks using supercritical carbon dioxide as the solvent. Exposure of the impregnated disks to strong sunlight (3 h) resulted in visible darkening of the polymers. The polymer materials were then treated to a dynamic flow of supercritical carbon dioxide (10 min) in the hope of removing any residual organic ligands/complexes formed from the visible decomposition of the initial silver complexes. TEM analyses of thin microtomed sections of these composite materials revealed dark nanometer-sized particles [likely to be silver(I) oxide formed from the reaction of the complexes and water]. Studies are currently in progress to identify the exact composition of these particles (i.e. silver metal or silver oxide) and to further characterize the inorganic and organic decomposition products of the complexes.
