    • The lithium di-tert-butylbiphenyl solution is formed by adding slivers of lithium directly to a solution of slightly greater than on equivalent of DBB in THF under a flow of argon. The deep blue color of the radical anion forms immediately, if water, oxygen and carbon dioxide have been excluded. The solution is cooled to 0° and stirred until the reaction is complete. The resulting solution of LiDBB will decompose slowly at room temperature.
