x absorbances in the FTIR-ERS spectrum on this film decreases by ≈40% upon grafting of the first pure PAA layer and by ≈80% upon grafting of a second PAA layer. We think that this is due to a change in orientation of the C-F bonds in the initial layer that attenuates the IR absorption according to the surface selection rule. (See: Porter, M. D. Anal.
