The number of amino acid matches obtained by pairing two random sequences of the same length is given by the binomial distribution with p = 1/20 if one assumes that the 20 amino acids have the same probability to occur. For sequences of length N there will be on average pN identical amino acids, with a variance Np(1 - p). For random sequences, 95% of pairwise comparisons yield a sequence identity between 1% and 9%.
