With the exception of point like scatterers and scattering mean free paths ℓ ≫ λ, the differentiation between single and multiple scattering is not trivial. For larger scatterers (≫ λ), CB happens already inside one single scatterer, i.e. participates to the form factor [22]. In many materials like polymers, for example, where the scattering is caused by fluctuations of the index of refraction, distinct scatterers cannot even be defined. Appart from single scattering, also loops of light paths starting and ending at the 'same scatterer' do not contribute to CB [23]. The weight of these light paths, however, becomes only relevant for very strongly scattering media (ℓ* of the order of the wavelength λ). Again, like in the case of single scattering, the question arises about the size of the 'same scatterer'. The relevant distance should be of order λ because this is the distance beyond which two point like scatterers can be regarded as independent when illuminated by a plane wave and because λ is the extension of one mode (which is the coherence area of the light) inside a multiple scattering media.
