3 to regenerate (R)-1. (R)-1 was purified by column chromatography without recrystallization in order to avoid possible resolution during the crystallization process. The optical rotation of the recovered (R)-1 indicated >99% ee, which suggests that no racemization occurs in the course of this reaction sequence.
