A fast ( sim 0.3 μsec time constant) pyroelectric detector records the time structure of the FEL pulses, which reach a constant amplitude between a smooth rise and fall. We use a pyroelectric detector with a pinhole aperture to find the intensity profile of the FEL illumination.

The measured field profile is fit to E(x)=Eace-(x-L/2)2/2α2. Here, α is the measured half width of the FEL spot size (close to the diffraction limit, e.g., sim 0.7 mm at 0.6 THz) and L is the sample length. The conductivity measurement gives σave/σ (0), the average conductivity of the sample. Using α and the dependence on Eac of σavg/σ(0), we can simply obtain σdc (Eac)/σdc (0). N. G. Asmar et al. We ignore the effect of electron screening of the applied field, which we estimate to be negligible for our electron densities.

Earlier work [, ] found disagreement between Te estimated from the EMC and Te measured from PL spectra. Higher subbands in the rather wide quantum well used in this earlier work may have made obtaining a valid estimate for Te problematic.

barPloss propto exp (- hbarωLO/kB barTe ) is not valid for barTe alt 50 K, because acoustic phonon scattering dominates energy loss. High dc field studies also find deviations from Eq. (1) at high barTe, sim 150 200 K

For this plot, we use barPabs ( barTe =80 K). The slight curvature of barPabs in Fig. reffig1(b) corresponds to a weakly barTe dependent prefactor h. Using different barTe between 50 and 150 K has no effect on the position of the resonance in Fig. reffig3, and little effect on the overall scale of h(fdr).

THz photons can create pairs of TA phonons with oppositely directed momenta, each with half the photon energy [, ]. If defects (e.g., interface fluctuations) relax momentum conservation, then acoustic phonons with energy equal to the photon energy can be produced.
